Disruption of the Olympic-Torch Relay

From Thailand’s “The Nation” newspaper, dated April 17, 2008 (in part):
===============================
Protesters disrupting tomorrow’s Olympic-torch relay will be
arrested immediately and prosecuted for public disturbance, police
say.

Foreigners will be expelled and banned from returning. Those with
residency will have it revoked permanently, spokesman Lt-General
Watcharaphol Prasarnratchakij says.

What is this really about?

It’s about Face. And practicality.

First, Thailand has important economic ties with China.

Second, China is much, much larger and more powerful than Thailand. Not a good idea to piss off or otherwise embarrass that kind of neighbor.

Face is all about respect, appearances, and manners. In Asia, Face is all-important.

While you don’t need to understand Face in all its nuances, you do need to at least have a basic awareness of when it’s in play and what its unwritten rules are.

So long as you don’t make a public spectacle of yourself (be a spectacle in private), or act the bully (like being rude or roughly handling a Thai girl), your Thailand trip can be both safe and loads of fun.
